Stay up-to-date on the issues that impact Kansas water rights.Need water? Have a water right to sell? Concerned about preserving the value of your water right? Want to learn more about the latest issues that impact Kansas water rights? The Kansas Water Appropriation Act empowers the Chief Engineer of the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Division of Water Resources to control, conserve, regulate, allot, and aid in the distribution of the State's water resources 'for the benefits and beneficial uses of all of its inhabitants in accordance with the rights of priority of appropriation.' The Chief Engineer has the power to adopt and enforce reasonable regulations as necessary to discharge these duties. The Act allows owners to apply to change the place of use, the point of diversion, or the use made of existing water rights without losing their place in the line of priority. Because much of the state is closed to applications for new appropriations, purchasing existing water rights and changing them to a new use is becoming much more important. Mr. Traster will help you determine whether a water right you're interested in is valid, can be put to your use, and some of the pitfalls if you just want to keep doing what you have been doing.
